NAWEA Board
The North American Wind Energy Academy (NAWEA) Board oversees NAWEA’s governance and long-term direction. Board members have been involved with NAWEA for many years and help set priorities that advance wind energy research, education, and collaboration across academia, industry, and national laboratories.
NAWEA Board Members
-

Tom Acker - Salt River Project, NAU
Tom is a Senior Principal Engineer in Innovation & Development at Salt River Project (SRP) and an Emeritus Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Northern Arizona University. His work includes renewable-energy systems with an emphasis on wind energy and grid integration, and he has supported NAWEA through long-standing conference and committee roles. He serves as Treasurer of NAWEA.

Luis (Tony) Martinez-Tossas – Novo Blades
Dr. Luis “Tony” Martínez-Tossas is CTO and Inventor at Novo Blades, a cleantech startup developing next-generation wind-turbine blade designs focused on improving aerodynamic performance. He also consults on aerodynamics, wake modeling, and high-fidelity simulation, drawing on experience across industry, academia, national-lab research, and technology development. He has supported NAWEA and the NAWEA/WindTech Conference since 2019, including leading the scientific committee for the 2019 and 2022 conferences.
-

Jonathan W. Naughton - University of Wyoming
Jonathan W. Naughton is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wyoming and Co-Director of the Wind Energy Research Center. His work spans experimental fluid dynamics, aerodynamics, turbulence, instrumentation, atmospheric inflow, blade aerodynamics, and wind-energy measurements. Beyond his academic work, he has helped translate research into practice through aerospace consulting and technology commercialization, including founding Wyoming Instrumentation Development, co-founding Resono Pressure Systems, and advising Airloom Energy. He chaired the 2013 WindTech Conference and served on the organizing committee for the NAWEA/WindTech 2023 Conference.
-

Andy Swift - Texas Tech University
Dr. Andrew (Andy) Swift is Professor Emeritus at Texas Tech University and a long-time leader in wind energy education and workforce development through the Texas Tech University National Wind Institute. His work spans wind turbine engineering (including rotor dynamics and aerodynamics), wind-resource characterization, and renewable-energy applications, and he has helped develop wind-energy curricula and training pathways for the next generation of professionals.
-

Robert Thresher - NLR
Bob Thresher is a wind and marine energy pioneer with more than 45 years of experience in renewable-energy research, development, and program leadership. He is a Researcher Emeritus at the National Laboratory of the Rockies and was Director of the National Wind Technology Center from 1994–2008, helping shape U.S. national wind-energy research and early offshore wind and marine-energy programs. Earlier in his career, he worked with the U.S. Department of Energy on early wind technologies and held a faculty appointment at Oregon State University.
-

Paul Veers - NLR
Paul Veers is Senior Research Fellow Emeritus at the National Laboratory of the Rockies and served as chief engineer for the National Wind Technology Center. He has worked in wind energy since 1980, with contributions spanning atmospheric turbulence simulation, structural dynamics and fatigue, blade aeroelastic design, and wind-turbine/plant engineering. He is NAWEA President and Executive Director and served as Chair of the 2023 NAWEA/WindTech Conference.
